A Simple Plan for E-Commerce
September 22, 2008 – 9:53 pm
On the surface, succeeding with a website may seem easy. After all, everybody has one these days. However, all the sites you encounter are not based on E-commerce, and those that are don’t always make money. In order for your website to achieve its full potential, you must first clarify two critical points: the overall purpose and how you are going to meet the needs of your audience.
Understand Your Purpose
Establishing your core purpose is important as it sets the foundation for your website. Are you merely look to provide information? Are you trying to introduce the world to a new product or service? Are you trying to subscribe readers to your blog? So many sites have failed because they either ignored or forgot this simple step.
As several industries are locked in competition, companies often try to cover a range of purposes. This results in an insufficient website that lacks focus. Even a well designed site can be unorganized, making things overly complex for the visitor. A website that wanders off track ultimately crumbles. When the purpose is not set, there is no direction and the webmaster doesn’t have a full vision of what needs to be done. Once that clarity is achieved, everything else tends to fall into place.
The best way to know if you are on the right track is to sit back and observe your content. Scan your web pages up and down. Check every header and every sentence. Make sure your product descriptions are intact, your shopping carts and payment buttons easy accessible. If you find that the content isn’t enough to meet your goals, make a few changes or go with a new idea entirely. You will find that it is much better to do this from the start rather than in the middle of a failing marketing campaign. Even if the business is multi-dimensional, make sure the details are clear on the homepage and well defined in your landing pages.
Understand Your Visitors
With the goals for your website all laid, you now need to focus on your visitors. While its impossible to anticipate every desire of your audience, you must still understand what they expect when visiting your site. If your email tempted someone over to a landing page, that indicates that they have a need for something or a problem that needs to solved. When your website is targeted for the visitor, it shouldn’t take them long to determine whether they have found what they are looking for or not. If they are moved by the content and become confident, it is your job to have something in place to seal the deal with quickness, enabling the visitor to fulfill there needs without flaw. You only get so long to impress your audience before they move onto the competition.
Once you have outlined your plan and learn to meet the expectations of potential clients, your job as a webmaster will be much easier. In the end, you will get what you want in the way of traffic and sales while your customers get the benefit of a reliable service.
